     John Cordes was born circa 1775 at Germany (?). He married Elizabeth Coxsey in 1801 at St. Olave, Southwark, London, England.¹ John Cordes died on 24 June 1850 at 45 Baker St, Mile End Old Town, Stepney, London, Middlesex, England.²
     [There is some evidence, from the Sheffield period, that John's wife was named Elizabeth, but the identification with Elizabeth Coxsey. is rather tentative.] He appeared on the 1841 Census of Stepney, London, at Baker Street, enumerated 7 June 1841.³ I formerly thought that Rebecca Cordes may be the widow of another son (other than Henry, that is) of John Cordes, possibly also called John. I now (Mar/09) think it somewhat more likely that Rebecca Cordes is actually a daughter of John; if so, she would be a sister of Eliza, Ann, and Henry. Her age is consistent with the other "Sister" referred to in a letter (dated April 1848) from John to his son Henry. It would be extremely interesting if either of these possibilities could be established with some reasonable degree of confidence. Read a transcription of the letter or view an image of the actual letter; see the envelope here. A family note shows three children: Eliza, Mary, and Henry. There is no mention of Ann.
The note also says John Cordes came from Germany, and lists marriages and children for Eliza, Mary, and Henry. For some further discussion about Mary (whose name is probably really Ann) and also about the existence of the possible daughter Rebecca please see the pages for Mary and Rebecca. The informant at his death was his daughter, Anne Lockhart, of 23 Carter Street, Poplar New Town.² There is beginning to be some evidence suggesting that John Cordes may actually have been born in London, and possibly married to an Elizabeth Coxsey (IGI record, 1801). If this turns out to be the case then my family note is wrong, although it could be that John's father may have come from Germany. Research on this is very difficult but various clues are being investigated.⁴

     Eliza Catherine Cordes was born on 16 January 1864 at Cape Town, South Africa. She was the daughter of Henry Cordes and Jane Olive Burberry. Eliza Catherine Cordes died circa 1865 at Cape Town, South Africa. She was buried circa 1865 at Somerset Road Cemetery, Cape Town, Cape District, Republic of South Africa.¹

     John Frederick Cordes was born on 12 August 1868 at Cape Town, South Africa. He was the son of Henry Cordes and Jane Olive Burberry. John Frederick Cordes died before 1871 at Cape Town, South Africa.

     Olive Burberry Cordes was born on 9 August 1908 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Henry Abner Cordes and Jennie Armour Edwards. Olive Burberry Cordes married George Basil Goodwin, son of Jethro Goodwin and Julia (?), in 1944 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.¹ Olive Burberry Cordes died on 12 December 1998 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, at age 90. She was buried on 19 December 1998 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.²

     Robert Henry Cordes was born on 9 December 1903 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the son of Henry Abner Cordes and Jennie Armour Edwards. Robert Henry Cordes married Marjorie Greenwood, daughter of Edward Greenwood and Margaret Priscilla Moser, on 6 August 1928 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia.¹ Robert died on 4 August 1962 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, at age 58.

     Henry Cordes was born on 30 October 1845 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England.¹ He was the son of Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard. Henry Cordes died on 31 May 1847 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England, at age 1.

     Ann Cordes was christened on 21 November 1817 at Cathedral Church St. Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey. Ann Cordes married Peter Slinn circa 1839 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Ann Cordes married Joseph Lockhart, son of William Lockhart, on 20 September 1847 at the Parish Church, Stepney, Middlesex, England.¹ Ann Cordes died on 11 April 1905 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, at age 87.
     
     Ann Slinn and Henry Cordes appeared on the 1841 Census Sheffield, at Mill Lands, enumerated 7 June 1841, also Anne's son Henry Slinn, age 1.² Anne Lockhart was the registrant for the death of John Cordes on 24 June 1850 at 45 Baker St, Mile End Old Town, Stepney, London, Middlesex, England; on 24 June 1850 she was living at 23 Carter Street, Tower Hamlets.³ Ann Cordes and Joseph Lockhart appeared on the 1851 Census of Tower Hamlet, London, at 23 Carter St, enumerated 30 March 1851. It is probably Anne's son Henry Slinn, age 10, who is with them.⁴ Ann Cordes appeared on the 1871 Census Sheffield, enumerated 2 April 1871., as did her nephew Frederick and his wife Elizabeth, and their daughter Jessie.⁵ She appeared on the 1881 Census Sheffield, enumerated 3 April 1881.⁶ She appeared on the 1901 Census of Attercliffe, Sheffield, enumerated 31 March 1901.⁷

     Dorcas Jessie Cordes was born circa 5 March 1848 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England. She was the daughter of Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard. Dorcas Jessie Cordes married Thomas Betheridge Topp, son of John Bethridge Topp and Elizabeth Hall, on 1 September 1870 at Claremont, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
     Dorcas Jessie Cordes appeared on the 1851 Census of Southwark, London, in the household of her parents, Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard.¹

     Mary Ann Cordes was born circa May 1850 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England.^1,2 She was the daughter of Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard.
     Mary Ann Cordes appeared on the 1851 Census of Southwark, London, in the household of her parents, Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard.² Mary Ann Cordes appeared on the 1871 Census of Nether Hallam, Sheffield , in the household of Eliza Catharine Cordes and Stephen Fellows.³ Probable: Mary Ann Cordes appeared on the 1881 Census of Chelsea, London, enumerated 3 April 1881, as Mary A Cordes, Boarder, Unmarried, age unclear (should be 30, looks more like 20), Dressmaker, born Ipswich, Suffolk.⁴ She appeared on the 1891 Census of Chelsea, London, enumerated 5 April 1891, as Mary Cordes, a Lodger, Single, age apparently 38 (should be 40), Dressmaker, born Ipswich, Suffolk.⁵ She appeared on the 1901 Census of Chelsea, London, enumerated 31 March 1901, as Mary Cordes, Head, Single, age 40 (should be 50), Dressmaker, born Ipswich, Suffolk.⁶

     Lucy Kate Cordes was born circa 1857 at London, Middlesex, England.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Cordes and Sophia Millard. Lucy Kate Cordes married John Barnett between 1881 and 1885.²

     Harold Cordes Churchill was born on 30 March 1894. He was the son of Henry Albert Churchill and Martha Jane Cordes. Harold Cordes Churchill married Muriel Annie Payne, daughter of George Payne and Mary Ann Bolton, on 11 August 1928 at St Paul's Church, Warwick, England. Harold Cordes Churchill died on 12 September 1962 at age 68.

     Eliza Catharine Cordes was born circa 1810 at London, Middlesex, England. She was the daughter of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey. Eliza Catharine Cordes married Stephen Fellows on 23 December 1840 at Parish Church, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England.^1,2 Eliza Catharine Cordes died on 22 April 1876 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
     Eliza Catharine Cordes and Stephen Fellows appeared on the 1841 Census Sheffield, at Bakers Yard, Pea Croft Court, enumerated 7 June 1841.^3,4 Eliza Catharine Cordes and Stephen Fellows appeared on the 1851 Census Sheffield, enumerated 30 March 1851. Their children Frederick and Mary Ann were listed as living with them. A son Stephen, age 5, was also listed.⁵ Eliza Catharine Cordes and Stephen Fellows appeared on the 1861 Census Sheffield, at 9 Smithfield Court, enumerated 7 April 1861. Their son Frederick was listed as living with them.⁶ Eliza Catharine Cordes and Stephen Fellows appeared on the 1871 Census of Nether Hallam, Sheffield, at 27 Bell Road, enumerated 2 April 1871.. Their grandson Stephen, age 2, and Eliza's niece Mary Ann Cordes (daughter of Henry and Sophia), age 20, are also with them.⁷
