     William Churchill was born in 1927. He was the son of Bertram Henry Churchill and Freda Makinson. William Churchill died in 1974 at Henley, England.

     Mary Cordes was born circa 1802. She was the daughter of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey.
          Mary Cordes may be the same person as Mary Ann Hepworth born c. 1802, found by searching Ancestry for "Mary Hepworth". However, the notion that Mary Cordes, listed as a daughter of John and Elizabeth Cordes in a family note, married a Hepworth may be a mistaken interpretation. I now [Mar. 28/09] think it more likely that Mary married at Hepworth, probably the Hepworth in Yorkshire. The remainder of the entry on Mary in the family note is consistent with identifying Mary as Ann, the daughter who married (1) Peter Slinn and (2) Joseph Lockhart.
     The whole situation is further confused by my current belief [as of March 2009] that Rebecca is quite likely a hitherto unsuspected daughter of John and Elizabeth; there is no mention at all of Rebecca in the family note.

     Elizabeth Coxsey married John Cordes in 1801 at St. Olave, Southwark, London, England.¹
     Elizabeth Coxsey looks like the best candidate for the Elizabeth who marries John Cordes [JGC - 28 Mar 2009].

     Stephen Fellows was born in 1813 at Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, England. He married Eliza Catharine Cordes, daughter of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey, on 23 December 1840 at Parish Church, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England.^1,2 Stephen Fellows died on 7 September 1873 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
     Stephen Fellows and Eliza Catharine Cordes appeared on the 1841 Census Sheffield, at Bakers Yard, Pea Croft Court, enumerated 7 June 1841.^3,4 Stephen Fellows and Eliza Catharine Cordes appeared on the 1851 Census Sheffield, enumerated 30 March 1851. Their children Frederick and Mary Ann were listed as living with them. A son Stephen, age 5, was also listed.⁵ Stephen Fellows and Eliza Catharine Cordes appeared on the 1861 Census Sheffield, at 9 Smithfield Court, enumerated 7 April 1861. Their son Frederick was listed as living with them.⁶ Stephen Fellows and Eliza Catharine Cordes appeared on the 1871 Census of Nether Hallam, Sheffield, at 27 Bell Road, enumerated 2 April 1871.. Their grandson Stephen, age 2, and Eliza's niece Mary Ann Cordes (daughter of Henry and Sophia), age 20, are also with them.⁷

     Sophia Millard married Henry Cordes, son of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey, on 23 June 1845.¹ Sophia Millard died on 10 June 1858 at Saint James sub-district, Bermondsey, London, Surrey, England.²
     Sophia Millard and Henry Cordes appeared on the 1851 Census of Southwark, London, at 7 East St, enumerated 30 March 1851, Henry's age is shown as 32, occupation Millwright. Their children Dorcas Jessie and Mary Ann were listed as living with them.³

     Jane Olive Burberry was born circa August 1827 at Reigate, Surrey, England. She was the daughter of Abner Burberry and Hannah Burdale. Jane Olive Burberry was baptized on 22 August 1827 at Reigate, Surrey, England. She married Henry Cordes, son of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey, on 26 November 1859 at Poplar, Middlesex, England.¹ Jane Olive Burberry died on 20 January 1895 at Birmingham, England; Martha Jane was the registrant for the death of her mother.²
     Jane Olive Burberry appeared on the 1851 Census of Stepney, London, at Mile End Old Town, enumerated 30 March 1851.³
     Henry and Jane Cordes, with children Dorcas Jessie (step-daughter of Jane) and Martha Jane, spent approximately ten years, from about 1860 to 1870, in Cape Town. Presumably Mary Ann and Lucy Kate also went with them, but there is no direct evidence for this. Henry was working as an engineer on the Breakwater Project in Cape Town.⁴ She and Henry Cordes appeared on the 1871 Census Birmingham, at 35 Alston St, enumerated 2 April 1871. Their children Henry Abner and Martha Jane were listed as living with them.^5,6 Jane Olive Burberry appeared on the census of 1881 at 30 Devonshire St, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.⁷

     Henry Albert Churchill was born on 5 March 1866. He was the son of James Churchill and Mary Stokes. Henry Albert Churchill married Martha Jane Cordes, daughter of Henry Cordes and Jane Olive Burberry, on 3 June 1893 at Staffordshire, England. Henry Albert Churchill died on 19 July 1956 at age 90.

     Freda Makinson was born before 1909 at England. She married Bertram Henry Churchill, son of Henry Albert Churchill and Martha Jane Cordes, in 1923. Freda Makinson died after 1963.

     Henry Cordes was born between 8 July 1820 and 2 April 1821 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.² He was the son of John Cordes and Elizabeth Coxsey.
     Henry Cordes married first Sophia Millard on 23 June 1845.³
     Henry Cordes married second Jane Olive Burberry, daughter of Abner Burberry and Hannah Burdale, on 26 November 1859 at Poplar, Middlesex, England, Residence for both Jane and Henry is stated to be Mill Wall, Poplar, Middlesex. This is in the area of London now known as the Isle of Dogs, or the Docklands.⁴ Henry Cordes died on 7 July 1880 at Walsall, Staffordshire, England; Martha Jane was the registrant for the death of her father.⁵
      He apprenticed as a millwright for seven years to Thomas Cavill in Sheffield.

     Jennie Armour Edwards was born on 16 March 1873 at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.¹ She was the daughter of Robert Henry Edwards and Annie Andrews. Jennie Armour Edwards married Henry Abner Cordes, son of Henry Cordes and Jane Olive Burberry, on 31 July 1901 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia.¹ Jennie Armour Edwards died on 22 February 1945 at age 71.²

     George Basil Goodwin was born on 15 September 1895 at Barrington Head, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.³ He was the son of Jethro Goodwin and Julia (?).^1,2 George Basil Goodwin married Gladys Mae (?) after 1917. George Basil Goodwin married Olive Burberry Cordes, daughter of Henry Abner Cordes and Jennie Armour Edwards, in 1944 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.⁴ George Basil Goodwin died on 27 November 1962 at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia, at age 67. He was buried on 29 November 1962 at Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia.⁵

     Edna Marjorie Greenwood was born on 23 July 1900 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. She was the daughter of Edward Greenwood and Margaret Priscilla Moser. Marjorie Greenwood married Robert Henry Cordes, son of Henry Abner Cordes and Jennie Armour Edwards, on 6 August 1928 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia.¹ Marjorie died on 17 August 1974 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, at age 74.
     Marjorie Greenwood appeared on the 1901 Census of Broughton, Manchester, in the household of her parents, Edward Greenwood and Margaret Priscilla Moser.

     Muriel Annie Payne was born on 8 December 1898 at Brixton, London, England. She was the daughter of George Payne and Mary Ann Bolton. Muriel Annie Payne married Harold Cordes Churchill, son of Henry Albert Churchill and Martha Jane Cordes, on 11 August 1928 at St Paul's Church, Warwick, England. Muriel Annie Payne died in June 1980 at age 81.

     Peter Robin Franklin Clarke was born in November 1928. He was the son of George Robin Clarke and Winifred Ida Franklin. Peter Robin Franklin Clarke died on 24 April 1997 at age 68.
